Types of Rough Diamonds: Octahedral, Cubic, Dodecahedral and Other Natural Crystal Shapes

Introduction

Natural diamonds are found in a remarkable variety of crystal shapes, sizes, and structures. Before a diamond is transformed into a polished gemstone, it exists as rough diamond material with characteristics shaped by the geological conditions under which it formed and the processes it experienced during its journey toward the Earth's surface.

Understanding the different types of rough diamonds is important for diamond manufacturers, wholesalers, traders, gemologists, and businesses involved in the natural diamond industry. The shape of a rough diamond can influence its examination, cutting strategy, potential polished yield, and commercial suitability.

Some rough diamonds display clearly defined geometric crystal faces, while others have rounded outlines, irregular surfaces, or twinned structures. Each type presents different considerations during evaluation and manufacturing.

For businesses working with natural diamonds, recognizing these variations is an important part of understanding rough diamond quality and potential.

At Bhavin Gems, our roots in the diamond industry date back to 1987. In this guide, we explore the principal types of rough diamond crystal shapes, their identifying characteristics, and why understanding natural crystal structure matters when evaluating rough diamonds.

1. What Are Rough Diamond Crystal Shapes?

A rough diamond is a natural diamond that has not undergone conventional cutting and polishing to become a finished gemstone.

Its crystal shape refers to the external form of the diamond before manufacturing. These forms develop through the conditions of crystal growth and may subsequently be modified by geological processes.

Diamond crystals commonly belong to the cubic crystal system. However, they can develop different external forms, including octahedral, cubic, and dodecahedral shapes, as well as combinations and distorted variations.

The appearance of a rough diamond does not always reveal its complete internal structure. Some crystals have clear, well-defined faces, while others show surface irregularities, inclusions, fractures, or signs of natural resorption.

Understanding the external crystal form provides useful information, but it is only one part of rough diamond evaluation. Internal characteristics, color, dimensions, and possible cutting options must also be considered.

2. Octahedral Rough Diamonds

An octahedral rough diamond is one of the best-known natural diamond crystal forms.

An ideal octahedron has eight triangular faces. Its geometric appearance can resemble two pyramids joined at their bases.

Octahedral crystals are commonly discussed in diamond crystallography because this form is associated with the natural growth of diamond crystals.

Key characteristics

  • Eight triangular faces in an ideal crystal

  • A relatively recognizable geometric outline

  • Potentially well-defined crystal edges and faces

  • Possible variations in proportions and surface condition

  • May contain internal inclusions or structural imperfections

Natural octahedral diamonds are not always perfectly symmetrical. Growth conditions, surface resorption, deformation, and other geological processes can modify their original form.

Why octahedral shapes matter

An octahedral crystal can offer useful information when a manufacturer considers possible cutting directions and polished shapes.

However, its external form alone does not determine the best manufacturing plan. The crystal's internal characteristics and the expected quality of the finished diamond must also be assessed.

For rough diamond buyers, recognizing an octahedral shape is a useful starting point for understanding the material, rather than a guarantee of high polished yield or value.

3. Cubic Rough Diamonds

Cubic rough diamonds have an external form resembling a cube, with six square faces in an ideal geometric example.

Although both cubic and octahedral diamonds belong to the cubic crystal system, their external crystal forms differ.

Cubic diamond crystals can display relatively broad faces and a block-like appearance. Natural specimens may also show rounded edges, uneven surfaces, or combinations of different crystal forms.

Key characteristics

  • A cube-like external appearance

  • Six square faces in an ideal cube

  • Broad crystal faces and a block-like outline

  • Possible surface irregularities or rounded edges

  • Different cutting considerations from more elongated or pointed crystals

Cutting considerations

A cubic crystal's proportions may affect the possible shapes and sizes of polished diamonds that can be produced.

The manufacturer's objective is to determine how the available material can best be used while considering internal inclusions, potential polished quality, manufacturing costs, and market demand.

It is not accurate to assume that every cubic rough diamond will produce a particular polished shape or a predictable yield. Each stone requires an individual assessment.

4. Dodecahedral Rough Diamonds

Dodecahedral forms are another important category in the discussion of natural diamond crystal morphology.

An ideal dodecahedron has twelve faces. In natural diamond descriptions, dodecahedral forms are often associated with curved or rounded crystal surfaces that differ from the sharp triangular faces of a typical octahedron.

Some natural diamonds display rounded outlines because their original crystal surfaces have been modified by geological processes, including resorption.

This means a diamond's present external form may not be identical to the shape in which it originally grew.

Key characteristics

  • An external form associated with twelve faces in the ideal geometric model

  • Potentially rounded or curved surfaces

  • A less sharply defined appearance than a typical octahedral crystal

  • Possible variations in proportions and surface features

Why this form matters

Rounded or curved rough diamonds can require careful examination to establish their dimensions and determine suitable manufacturing options.

The most appropriate cutting strategy depends on the complete crystal, including internal features and the possible polished outcomes.

For diamond manufacturers, understanding these forms helps distinguish the external appearance of a stone from the characteristics that ultimately determine its manufacturing potential.

5. Macles and Twinned Rough Diamonds

Not all rough diamonds develop as single, straightforward crystals.

Some occur as twinned crystals, commonly known in diamond terminology as macles. A macle is associated with a particular type of twinning in diamond crystallography.

Macles can have a flattened triangular appearance, although their external shape and proportions vary.

The twin structure can affect how the crystal is examined and how a manufacturer approaches cutting.

Key characteristics

  • A twinned crystal structure

  • Often a flattened or triangular external outline

  • Potentially different proportions from typical octahedral crystals

  • Manufacturing decisions influenced by the internal structure and shape

Manufacturing considerations

The shape of a macle may limit certain cutting options while offering other possibilities.

Manufacturers must assess the stone's dimensions, internal characteristics, and expected polished results before deciding how to proceed.

The fact that a diamond is twinned does not automatically determine its quality or commercial value. As with other rough diamonds, the individual stone must be evaluated on its own characteristics.

6. Irregular and Distorted Rough Diamonds

Many natural rough diamonds do not fit neatly into a single ideal geometric category.

Some crystals have irregular outlines, distorted faces, rounded edges, or combinations of different crystal forms. These variations can result from natural growth conditions, resorption, deformation, and other geological processes.

An irregular crystal may appear less visually symmetrical than a well-formed octahedron or cube, but its commercial potential cannot be determined from appearance alone.

Common characteristics

  • Uneven or asymmetrical outlines

  • Distorted crystal faces

  • Mixed or modified crystal forms

  • Rounded edges or irregular surface features

  • Potential variation in internal structure and manufacturing suitability

Why individual assessment is important

Irregular rough diamonds may offer several possible cutting strategies, depending on their size and internal characteristics.

The manufacturer must assess whether the material can produce commercially suitable polished diamonds and whether the anticipated results justify the manufacturing costs.

A seemingly irregular crystal may still have useful manufacturing potential, while a visually attractive crystal may contain internal features that restrict its options.

This is why professional evaluation is more reliable than judging rough diamonds by external appearance alone.

7. Rounded and Resorbed Rough Diamonds

Some rough diamonds display rounded or softened external surfaces rather than sharply defined crystal faces.

This appearance can develop when a diamond experiences resorption during its geological history. Resorption refers to the partial dissolution or modification of a crystal's surface under particular conditions.

As a result, a diamond that originally developed with a recognizable crystal form may have a different appearance by the time it is recovered.

Rounded rough diamonds may also display a mixture of remaining crystal faces and curved surfaces.

What buyers should understand

Rounded or resorbed appearance is a description of external morphology, not a complete quality grade.

It does not independently establish a diamond's color, clarity, internal structure, polished yield, or commercial value.

Buyers should consider the full range of physical and internal characteristics before assessing the suitability of any rough diamond.

8. How Crystal Shape Influences Rough Diamond Cutting

Crystal morphology can help manufacturers identify potential cutting opportunities, but the relationship between shape and the final polished result is complex.

A rough diamond's shape influences the amount of material available in different directions and the range of possible polished outlines.

However, the manufacturing decision must also account for internal inclusions, fractures, color distribution, crystal orientation, and the desired quality of the finished stone.

For example, a crystal may appear suitable for producing one large polished diamond, but internal characteristics could make an alternative cutting plan more appropriate.

Another rough diamond may offer the possibility of producing multiple polished stones, depending on its dimensions and structure.

Manufacturers therefore consider several factors together:

  1. Crystal morphology: The external form and proportions of the rough diamond.

  2. Internal characteristics: Inclusions, fractures, and other structural features.

  3. Cutting orientation: The directions and positions considered during planning.

  4. Potential polished shapes: The outlines that may be achievable.

  5. Weight retention: The amount of rough material likely to remain in the finished diamonds.

  6. Expected quality: The likely characteristics of the polished results.

  7. Commercial suitability: Whether the anticipated products align with market demand and manufacturing costs.

Advanced planning tools may assist with this process, but the result still depends on the individual stone and the manufacturing decisions made.

9. Does Rough Diamond Shape Determine Its Value?

No. Crystal shape is an important consideration, but it does not independently determine the value of a rough diamond.

Two rough diamonds with similar external forms can have substantially different commercial values.

Their values may differ because of variations in weight, color, internal inclusions, fractures, proportions, and potential polished outcomes.

A crystal with a regular geometric form may offer useful cutting opportunities, but internal imperfections could limit its potential.

An irregular or rounded crystal may still be commercially suitable if its characteristics allow the production of desirable polished diamonds.

Rough diamond valuation therefore requires a broader assessment that includes:

  • Carat weight and dimensions

  • Crystal form and structure

  • Color and internal characteristics

  • Potential polished yield

  • Expected polished quality

  • Manufacturing expenses and risks

  • Current market demand

Understanding crystal shapes helps buyers interpret the material they are examining, but a reliable valuation must consider the stone as a whole.

10. How to Identify Different Rough Diamond Shapes

Identifying a rough diamond's external form begins with careful visual examination.

Suitable lighting and magnification can help reveal the crystal's faces, edges, proportions, and surface features.

An observer may look for triangular faces associated with octahedral forms, cube-like outlines, rounded or curved surfaces, or a flattened triangular shape associated with certain macles.

However, natural crystals can display mixed forms, distortions, and surface modifications. Their external appearance may therefore make classification difficult.

For more detailed evaluation, a trained gemologist or diamond professional may use additional examination techniques to understand the stone's characteristics.

It is also important to distinguish rough diamonds from other minerals that can resemble them. A crystal's appearance alone is not conclusive proof that it is a diamond.

Where authenticity matters commercially, appropriate professional testing and documentation should be considered.

11. Rough Diamond Shapes and the Natural Diamond Industry

Understanding rough diamond morphology is useful throughout the natural diamond supply chain.

Manufacturers use crystal characteristics when planning the transformation of rough material into polished gemstones.

Wholesalers and traders consider these characteristics when assessing available material and discussing manufacturing possibilities.

Jewelry businesses benefit from understanding the process because the characteristics of the rough diamond can influence the size, shape, and quality of the finished gemstone.

For buyers who specialize in rough diamonds, knowledge of crystal forms also helps support more informed discussions with suppliers and manufacturing partners.

Nevertheless, crystal morphology is only one component of diamond expertise. Understanding inclusions, color, manufacturing techniques, pricing, and market requirements is equally important.

Conclusion

Natural rough diamonds occur in a variety of crystal forms, including octahedral, cubic, dodecahedral, twinned, irregular, and rounded or resorbed forms.

Each form provides useful information about the diamond's external structure, but none independently determines its quality, polished yield, or commercial value.

The transformation from rough crystal to polished gemstone requires careful examination, technical planning, and manufacturing decisions that balance weight retention, finished quality, and market demand.

For diamond buyers, manufacturers, wholesalers, and traders, understanding rough diamond crystal shapes is an important step toward understanding the broader natural diamond industry.
